Can wood (Fir, Hemlock) pre-treated with MAS Penetrating Epoxy Sealer be finish-coated with tung and/or teak oil?
We're making live-edge stair treads using 3" thick Fir/Hemlock. I'm considering pre-treating the currently raw wood with penetrating epoxy to strengthen the tread blanks, especially any areas that may be soft relative to the surrounding wood. The exposed glu-lam posts and beams, as well as the window and door sills and jambs (pine) in our house have all been finished with copious coats of tung oil finish (Daly's Benmatte). Having to coat these surfaces with seven +/- coats of tung oil was not fun, but the end product was worth it. We really like the look, feel, warmth of the finish, plus touch ups are a breeze...
So, the question: If we pre-treat our tread blanks with MAS penetrating epoxy, can we then finish with something like Dalys Benmatte, or would we be flirting with a chemical fueled disaster? Thanks!
